Roof Repair Insurance Claims
Practical guidance on roof repair insurance claims — when roof damage may involve insurance, what evidence to collect, and what to check with your insurer or broker. This is not insurance or legal advice.
01
When roof damage may involve insurance
Buildings insurance often covers sudden or accidental damage — for example, storm damage or impact — but typically does not cover wear, age or a lack of maintenance. Whether a particular roof problem is covered depends on the wording of your policy.
This is practical guidance, not insurance advice. The only reliable answer on cover comes from your insurer or broker, against your actual policy.
02
What evidence to collect
Whatever the cause, evidence helps. Collect clear photographs of the damage, inside and out; note the date and what happened; and keep any contractor’s notes, quotes and receipts. The more contemporaneous the record, the stronger it is.
Collecting this early, before any repair, matters — it is hard to evidence damage after it has been fixed.
03
Photos, dates and weather context
For storm-related damage, the date and the weather at the time are part of the picture. Photographs that show the damage clearly, plus a note of when it happened, give an insurer the context they need.
Avoid assuming the cause — describe what you can see and when, and let the assessment follow.
04
Emergency make-safe works
Stopping further damage is usually both sensible and expected by insurers. Emergency make-safe work — temporary covering to stop water getting in — protects the building while a claim is considered. Keep records and receipts, and check whether your policy requires you to notify them first.
05
Contractor reports — and what not to assume
A roofer’s written report and photographs help you present the position, but they do not decide the claim — your insurer does, against your policy. Do not assume damage is covered, that a claim is worthwhile, or that an excess and premium impact make it the best route.
Get the facts on cover and excess from your insurer or broker first, then decide. In the North East, Evenii can provide the contractor report and the repair; the claim itself is between you and your insurer.
Evidence to keep
- Clear photographs of the damage, inside and out.
- The date the damage happened and what occurred.
- For storms, a note of the weather conditions at the time.
- A contractor’s written notes on the damage and likely cause.
- Records and receipts for any emergency make-safe work.
- Your policy terms — cover, excess and any notification requirement.

Frequently asked questions
Is roof damage covered by insurance?+
It depends entirely on your policy. Sudden, accidental or storm damage is often covered; wear, age and lack of maintenance usually are not. We do not give insurance advice — check the specifics with your insurer or broker.
Can I do emergency make-safe work before claiming?+
Most policies expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and emergency make-safe work is usually part of that. Keep records and receipts, and check your policy’s requirements — some ask you to notify them first.
Does a contractor’s report help a claim?+
A written report with photographs, describing the damage and likely cause, is useful supporting evidence. It is not a substitute for the assessment your insurer will make, but it helps you set out the position clearly.
Will making a claim definitely be worthwhile?+
Not always — excesses, premium impact and policy terms all matter. That is a decision for you and your insurer or broker, not something to assume. Get the facts on cover and excess before deciding.
