Roof Leak Repair
What to do if your roof is leaking, the common causes, how leaks are traced to source, and temporary measures before a permanent repair. Northeast England enquiries handled by Evenii.
What to do if your roof is leaking
Deal with the inside first. Move or cover anything valuable beneath the leak, catch the water where you safely can, and isolate any circuit if water is near electrics. That limits the damage while you arrange a roofer.
Then note what you can see — where the water is showing, when it started, whether it tracks with rain — and take photographs from ground level and from inside the loft if it is safe. That detail speeds up the diagnosis.
Common causes of roof leaks
On pitched roofs, leaks usually start with slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles, or with worn lead and flashings where the roof meets a chimney, a wall or a valley. On flat roofs, it is splits, blisters or failed detailing in the covering.
Drainage is a frequent hidden cause — a blocked gutter or outlet backs water up under the bottom courses or spills against the wall, and the leak inside looks like a roof failure when the real fix is clearing and correcting the drainage.
How roof leaks are traced
Because water travels, the only reliable approach is to inspect the roof and follow the evidence back to the entry point — not to seal whatever is closest to the stain. A good roofer checks the covering, the details and the drainage, and confirms the cause before repairing it.
Recording what is found in writing and photographs means the repair is targeted and there is a record of why.
Temporary measures
Where a leak is active and a permanent repair cannot be done immediately, make-safe work — temporary sealing or covering — stops further water getting in. It is a holding measure, not the finished repair, and a roofer should be clear about the difference.
The permanent repair follows once the cause is confirmed and conditions allow it to be done properly.
Repair recommendations
A repair should address the cause and suit the covering already on the roof. Where the leak is isolated, that is the end of it. Where it is a symptom of a wider problem, an honest roofer will set that out rather than keep patching.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the leak nowhere near the damp patch?+
Water runs along rafters, felt and plaster before it shows, so the stain inside is often well away from the failure on the roof. That is why tracing the leak to its source matters more than sealing the nearest visible mark.
Can I stop a roof leak temporarily myself?+
From inside, yes — catch and contain the water and protect what is below. The roof itself is not a safe place to attempt a temporary fix; that is work for a roofer with the right access and equipment.
What are the most common causes of roof leaks?+
Slipped or cracked slates and tiles, worn lead and flashings at chimneys and valleys, failed flat-roof coverings, and blocked gutters and outlets pushing water back under the roof line.
Will a leak always need a repair, or sometimes more?+
A contained cause is a repair. Where a leak is one of several, or the covering is at the end of its life, it can point to a bigger job — which an inspection will confirm rather than guess at.
